on moving at your own speed

somewhere out there, a boat is moving at exactly the speed the wind allows.

not faster. not slower. the sail catches what's available and the hull follows. nobody on board is checking the time.

we spend a lot of energy moving against our own rhythm. waking up before we're ready. finishing before we're done. leaving before we've arrived. the modern version of productivity is a kind of violence against the pace that actually suits you.

there's a word in japanese — ma — that means the pause between things. the gap that gives everything else meaning. a note held one beat longer. the moment after the door closes and before the next thing begins. most people don't notice it. some people live inside it.

the figure on the hill isn't waiting for the boat. they're not watching for any particular reason. they just stopped, and the boat was there, and that was enough. the water was that color. the wind was doing that thing. and there was nothing else that needed to happen.

moving at your own speed doesn't mean moving slowly. it means moving at the speed that lets you notice things. the speed at which the world stays legible. fast enough to cover ground. slow enough to remember it.

the boat will get where it's going. it always does. so will you.

there's no rush.
